Lux CapitalCheck size: Firm-level: Lux says it can invest from an initial $100K through high-conviction follow-ons as large as $100M across the company-building arc. This is not Shaq's personal standard check range.
Shaq partners with technical founders building instruments that make invisible physical or biological signals legible and platforms whose downstream value exceeds the value captured by the initial product alone. His experience in aerospace sensing, genomic measurement, liquid biopsy, enterprise technology, and healthcare supports a cross-domain lens on building-block technologies, defensibility, value capture, and the exact job AI performs inside a scientific workflow.
Deeply technical teams working from inception on platform or building-block companies, particularly when a new instrument makes a previously invisible signal measurable and enables many valuable downstream applications. He looks for clear platform strategy, defensibility, value capture, and precise context for how AI changes the scientific or physical task.
No personal pass list is published. His public pitch discussions and interviews push against undifferentiated hardware, platforms that create substantial downstream value but capture none, vague AI-for-science claims that do not specify the job being done, and teams unable to articulate history, competitors, supply constraints, or the full value chain.
In three crisp points, state the previously unreadable signal or unsolved job, the instrument or platform that makes it tractable, and how the company captures value as downstream use expands. Map the complete value chain, alternatives, technical bottlenecks, supply constraints, defensibility, and platform-vs-full-stack choice. For AI-biology, specify exactly which discovery or development task improves and how it is validated.
Identify an important physical or biological signal that current tools cannot reliably observe, then test whether the new instrument converts it into actionable digital data with repeatable accuracy and a scalable use path.
Map all downstream products and markets enabled by a platform, determine where economic value accrues, and design technical defensibility and a business model that let the enabling company capture a durable share.

“It's always important to contextualize exactly what the job is that needs to be done.”

Shaq worked on digital signal processing at NASA and Northrop Grumman, processing infrared and radio-frequency data for missions including the James Webb Space Telescope. He later worked with genomic signals at Illumina and supported GRAIL's liquid-biopsy platform from its early days. Before Lux, he advised large private-equity investors on enterprise technology and healthcare at Parthenon. He earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida and built a high-altitude balloon spacecraft while in high school.
