Former Principal, Northzone (off current roster); Investor & Advisor
Northzone (Web3)Check size: No current personal check range or active fund mandate is public. Historical Northzone investments include seed and Series A through later follow-ons, but third-party Northzone range estimates are stale and do not establish present authority. Confirm current capacity directly.
At Northzone, Markus invested across enterprise applications, infrastructure, developer products and healthcare, with a strong DACH footprint. His operating experience at digital-health company Kry shaped an appetite for founders modernizing regulated markets despite entrenched incentives. Later deals show a widening lens: Reonic digitizes renewable-energy installers; Duvo automates exception-heavy retail operations; CuspAI applies generative models and physics to materials discovery; Black Forest Labs builds frontier visual intelligence. Across them, the common pattern is deep domain experience, a clear operational bottleneck and software or AI that changes an established value chain.
Founders who have lived the problem; exceptional technical or research depth; products that replace manual work with measurable outcomes; strong early deployments; software that can become critical workflow infrastructure; communities or networks that compound; large regulated or legacy value chains open to reinvention; and teams capable of navigating market structure as well as product.
No current personal pass list is public. Historical evidence suggests risk in generic AI claims without deployment evidence, automation limited to the happy path, products that ignore regulation or incumbent incentives, narrow tools without workflow ownership, and founders lacking firsthand domain credibility. These are evidence-based inferences, not published exclusions.
First verify whether Markus is investing personally, advising or representing another vehicle. Lead with the exact broken workflow or value chain, evidence the founders have lived it, and why the technology can own execution rather than merely recommend. For AI, show production use, exception handling, human approvals, security, auditability and measurable labor or revenue impact. For regulated markets, map buyer incentives, policy, reimbursement or compliance and the path to expansion. Route Northzone fund pitches to its current team.
Look for founders whose prior operating experience gives them detailed knowledge of exceptions, incentives, buyers and failure modes competitors overlook.
Evaluate how an AI product handles fragmented systems, ambiguous inputs, approvals, retries and audit trails—not just the predictable happy path.
Model regulators, incumbents, buyers, users, reimbursement or procurement and identify which entrenched incentive the product can realign.
Test whether a product can grow from one painful task into an end-to-end operational layer sharing data, control and distribution.
For frontier AI, connect benchmark or model quality to synthesizable output, production integration, customer use and defensible feedback data.
Because Markus is off Northzone's roster, confirm whether he is acting as angel, advisor, board member or fund representative before discussing allocation.
AI can automate exception-heavy retail and CPG operations across fragmented ERPs, portals and spreadsheets when founders possess direct operational expertise and deployments show real labor reduction.
Generative AI combined with molecular and physics simulation can shorten discovery of synthesizable materials addressing compute, water, air and energy constraints.
End-to-end software spanning CRM, project design, procurement and billing can make small renewable-energy installers more efficient and accelerate distributed-energy deployment.

Markus Gleim joined Northzone in 2019, became Principal and led efforts in German-speaking markets, first from Stockholm and later Berlin. Northzone credits him with work on Ravio and Stonly; public deal evidence also links him to Reonic, Duvo, CuspAI, Black Forest Labs and Mimo. Before venture he worked at KKR, helped build Kry/Livi's UK business and scale Swedish operations, and consulted at BCG in Germany. He studied at Cambridge and Ruhr University Bochum across management, business, economics and social sciences. He is now off Northzone's live roster and remains publicly connected to portfolio companies as an investor or advisor.
