Tim Khoury

Deal Partner at Lightspeed Faction

Check size: Faction does not publish a standard check range or Tim's personal authority. The official mandate is Seed and Series A, across equity and tokens; public financing sizes are not Faction check sizes.

Their Thesis

Tim is a crypto-native early-stage investor with an explicit interest at the intersection of crypto and AI. His WeatherXM work shows a demand-first DePIN lens: token incentives can coordinate distributed supply, but a network is only durable when there is an external customer for the data or service produced. That fits Faction's broader mandate to back useful blockchain systems across the stack rather than speculation for its own sake.

How to Pitch Them

For DePIN, separately prove supply, quality, and demand: who contributes, how output is verified, who pays, why decentralized coordination is better, and what happens when incentives fall. Show token sinks and sources, unit economics, geographic density, customer contracts or pilots, and resistance to spoofing. For crypto–AI, explain how computation, data, identity, or verification improves beyond a centralized design.

What Excites Them

Networks with both a motivated supply side and proven external demand, real-world utility, a large total addressable market, a token that coordinates behavior the old system cannot, strong technical execution, and founders building for a long time horizon. He publicly emphasizes crypto–AI intersections and demand sustainability.

What They Pass On

Tim has explicitly identified missing demand as a common DePIN failure. The public thesis implies caution toward subsidized supply without paying users, token emissions that cannot survive lower rewards, data without quality or buyer validation, crypto added where ordinary coordination works better, and AI/crypto narratives without verifiable technical substance.

Key Frameworks

DePIN supply–demand balance

Underwrite contributor supply, output quality, and paying demand separately; the network is not sustainable if token rewards create production that no external customer values.

Post-subsidy durability

Model contributor economics and retention after token emissions decline, including non-token revenue, switching cost, hardware payback, and the minimum density needed for useful service.

Crypto–AI verification loop

For a decentralized AI network, show how work or data is verified, how malicious or low-quality contributions are penalized, who pays for output, and why open coordination beats a centralized operator.

In Their Own Words

“If there isn’t demand for what is actually being generated, you can’t sustain the network over time.”
