Jan-Dirk views blockchain and distributed-ledger technology as a multi-decade shift that can make valuable information as easy to transfer as smartphones made ordinary information. His operating philosophy is deliberately agile: combine complementary people, pursue the best trading and investment opportunities available, and move on when the evidence no longer supports them.
Groundbreaking technology with the potential to change daily life, exceptional founders who create outsized impact individually and as part of a complementary team, and opportunities where CMT's trading, regulatory, technical, and operating experience creates an edge.
Opportunities sustained mainly by hype after the underlying evidence weakens, and investments that no longer rank among the best available uses of the firm's capital and expertise.
Lead with the durable blockchain or distributed-ledger advantage rather than market hype. Explain the adoption bottleneck, founder-market fit, early evidence, token or business economics, regulatory posture, and why CMT's electronic-trading, market-structure, technical, or compliance experience materially improves the outcome. Keep the case evidence-driven and show what would invalidate it.
Continuously compare trading and investment opportunities, concentrate on the best-supported ones, and move on when their evidence or relative attractiveness deteriorates.
Build teams around people who can create impact independently but whose different strengths compound when combined; use that complementarity as a core company-building signal.

Jan-Dirk began in trading while still in high school, later helping run a Frankfurt trading office that was sold to Bank of America. He and Scott Casto founded Capital Markets Trading in 1997 after deciding their complementary approaches would be stronger together. After Colleen Sullivan introduced the team to Bitcoin, they committed resources to the sector and launched CMT Digital in 2017.
